1 Reviews of the Beachcomber 5 Bell

By: Missfruitcake  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

As a seasoned festival goer/camper, I have had many tents, some good, some bad, but ultimatly they were all nylon, came with god knows how many parts, and for the bigger ones, the best part of a degree in tent building to erect. Since the kids are getting bigger, and our last nylon tent was on its last legs, we purchased a 5 metre bell tent, it did cost quite a bit (£800 for tent, porch, stove, and flue kit) but it has been worth every penny.

We have had it at quite a few festivals, and on regular camping trips. The tent and ground sheet weigh about 25 kg each, plus the stove and flue make another 25kg. It is very sturdy and robust, has stood through torrential rain and storms, even a bit of snow, and we have all been inside warm and dry, with plenty of room to wander round and cook and dine in.We have even been able to dry our wet clothes inide the tent due to the dry heat generated from the little stove.

The tent is classed as a 12 berth if you lay persons around the centre pole like spokes on a wheel, weve had 5 people in it and had oodles of space. The open plan design with just one pole means it can be out of bag and up in less than 15 minuites, it typically takes us (myself and two teenage girls) less than an hour from parking up at a campsite, to being sat inside our tent with everything out and up. (Beds, table, chairs, rugs, lights, stove, flue, kitchen, windbreaks, porch, tarp/awning etc).

Not only does this tent look awesome, it is more customisable and personal than other tents I have seen. We started with the tent, we have now added allsorts to it for our glamping pleasure: wood basket, door bell, flags, bunting, eco fan, led lighting, rugs, satin throws/pillows, tarp, etc, the list can go on, but you really can make your bell tent your own. This is what really appealed to us when we bought it.

There are quite a few bell tents poping onto the market nowadays, but we did our research and paid the extra for the Windjamma from belltent.Biz, it has a door frame, some bell tents only have a gap up the side of the incline to get through, and other than having to stoop/crawl to get in, they apparently leak through the door hole, ours does not.We also chose the Windjamma as it is made of more robust 350g canvas, has a kevlar pannel ready for your stove which can be rolled up when not in use. The Ground sheet is separate from the tent, which means the sides can be rolled up, which is a god send in summer the morning after the night before. It also has pannels on the skirt that can be zipped/rolled up to let some air in, with netting to prevent beasties getting in, or the netting can be rolled/zipped up too (children find these little portals great fun)The door comes with two 'windows' so you can keep an eye on the outside world from the comfort of your tent.

Everywhere we have been with it we have other campers asking to have a look, which we are more than happy to show them round our patch of camping paradise.

Pros:

*looks great

*fully customisable

*loads of room inside, no stooping, 9ft max height

*warm and dry especially with stove

*the stove means you can toast marshmallows even in a thunderstorm.

*quick and easy to erect(unlike tepees/yurts)

*sides roll up if its hot (looks like its floating)so makes it the coolest place ever at a festival with no shade.

*can be used for other purposes (bbq/parties etc)

*will last forever if looked after

*makes you smile

Cons:

*Very heavy, but we put groundshhet in separate bag to manage weight

*even heavier if wet.

*may be problematic if you havent got access to large area to erect and dry out after a wet camping trip.

*large footprint (aprox 10 metres x 15 metres inc guys and porch) so check with campsite if you need a double pitch.

*the flue has gauze at the top (in the top hat) and this can get sooted up if you don't use properly dried wood, causing backdraught of smoke into tent, however, it takes about 2 mins to fluff off with an old toothbrush.

*addictive.

If I was to ever buy a tent again (which I don't plan on doing for many many years if ever) it would definitely be a bell tent.
